School Buses and Kids As we send our kids off to school each day on those big yellow school buses, we don’t often worry about whether our kids will arrive safely. With the rise of school bus accidents, however, it does beg the question, just how safe are school buses? Actually, the more important question might be just how safe are the school bus drivers? While many school bus accidents do happen because of poor road conditions, bad weather, poorly or improperly maintained buses, and impacts from other vehicles, some form of driver error remains the cause for the vast majority of school bus accidents and fatalities. We entrust school bus drivers with our most precious cargo – our children. We place our children’s very lives in their hands each and every day. We believe in good faith that these drivers will take their responsibilities seriously and obey all the rules of the road. Under the law, school bus drivers are held to an even higher standard of duty, as children are deemed to require extra protection. Still, accidents due to the negligence of school bus drivers happen each and every day.
As we have seen so many recent train accidents resulting from train operators sleeping, text messaging, talking on cell phones, and even intoxicated - the level of driver error on school buses is even higher. Driver fatigue, intoxication, poor training, and just plain bad driving are the biggest culprits. Speeding, aggressive driving, running off the road, failing to yield the right of way and inexperience behind the wheel are all factors leading to school bus accidents. This fact is all the more important since school buses provide the largest form of public transportation in the United States today. There are roughly 24 million children transported to and from school on school buses every day. That is double the number of people who travel on public transit buses each day. With that large a number of school buses on the road across the country, and growing each year, the odds of accident or injury while on a school bus only increase. According to national school bus accident statistics, school bus accidents account for roughly one third of the almost 400,000 accident fatalities that have occurred in the United States since 1990.
School bus accidents and injuries can be devastating. Besides
the emotional trauma, the high cost of doctors, hospitals, long
term medical expenses - and even death- can be financially
debilitating. Don’t go it alone. If your child has been involved
